The Little Match Girl – a Christmas Story

Recently, I heard a news story quoting the St. Paul Homeless Shelter saying that,  for the first time in their history, because of the recession and budget cutbacks, they will begin turning people away this winter.  It’s a sad situation, and I was inspired to record a reading of “The Little Match Girl” – a Christmas story by Hans Christian Anderson.  This poignant story (about 7 minutes long*) is as relevant today as it was in 1857.  There is also an inquiry to determine if anyone would be interested in forming a Readers Theater group with me.

Readers Theater  – From high school through my early 20’s, I periodically became involved with various school and community theater productions. My professional career made it extremely difficult to maintain that interest, but technology has changed to the point where I think it just might be possible for those who enjoy community theater to become active in an online global community of Readers Theater. For those who don’t know, Readers Theater is a form of theater production where the actors gather and read as if they were in an old-time radio production or a play with very minimal staging. Sound effects and music are added as appropriate. Using a computer, headset, mic, and free recording/teleconferencing software, it’s now possible to produce Readers Theater “radio plays” and post them online. I think it would be  tremendous fun.

If you would like to become involved in this effort, please leave your contact information below.  Filling out the form will “subscribe” you to the list. It’s a double opt-in process, which means you’ll receive an email confirmation request to indicate that you really want to be on the list and to avoid bogus submissions. If you know anyone you think might be interested, please forward a link to this page.   Thanks!  -  Jim Patton
